Join Nick Nelson for a vivid exploration of synaesthesia, a rare neurological phenomenon where the senses intertwine. Whether it’s hearing colour or tasting words, synaesthetes experience reality in ways that challenge conventional perception. Found in about 1 in 2000 people and found more commonly in women, synaesthesia often manifests in the creatively inclined, from Jimi Hendrix to contemporary artist Ali Banisadr.
In this richly illustrated talk, Nick delves into the science, art, and personal stories behind synaesthesia, tracing its influence from early modernists like Kandinsky to today’s abstract visionaries. Is synaesthesia a gift or a hindrance? Is it genetic, or can it be learned? Could you be synaesthetic without knowing?
With his trademark insight and wit, Nick Nelson, Director of Arcadia Education and Head of History of Art at Cheltenham College invites you to turn up, tune in, and see the world through a multi-sensory lens.
