Our delicious sparkling Perry made from organically grown traditional varieties of Perry pears. Pours golden and slightly hazy with very gentle bubbles. With an over-ripe pear fragrance, the taste is creamy with a good balance between initial sweetness and the dryness of the finish. Dunkertons Perry is fragrant and delicate and should be served lightly chilled.
The History of the Perry Pear
Though relatively uncommon perry pear trees are easily identified in an orchard landscape by their great height and cascading white blossom. Some of these majestic perry trees are over 300 years old. The mature trees can very often produce over a ton of pears. We harvest and press a range of traditional varieties with wonderful names such as Merrylegs, Red Horse, Moorcroft, Painted Lady and, Thorn. Each variety of perry pear is pressed, fermented and stored separately and then blended a year after pressing.
Perry was usually drunk in large quantities by all workers and farm labourers would frequently receive part of their wages in quantities of perry. Often perry was sent to areas with large populations in times of conflict with the French when imports of wine were reduced.
Being organic means we work with nature not against it. Organic farming involves using lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers. It involves adopting a more environmentally sustainable approach to management of the land and the natural environment such as ‘strip mowing’ which means we mow every other row so insects have more area to make their homes in. Since we don’t rely on synthetic pesticides and fertilisers which pollute water sources and contaminate the soil the wildlife in our orchards thrive.
The planet also prospers because healthy soils are a major store of carbon, containing three times as much carbon as the atmosphere and five times as much as forests.
Because of the absence of manufactured herbicides and the severely restricted use of pesticides, our orchards are sanctuaries for wildlife and provide homes to many bees, birds and butterflies. By managing and maintaining healthy habitats we support up to 50% more wildlife.
Dunkertons history reaches back to 1980 when our founders Ivor and Susie Dunkerton made the decision to escape London and buy a smallholding in Herefordshire. Their vision was to turn the land into a viable business opportunity and they soon realised that organic traditional cider and perry production was the answer.
Our unique methods of making our products means we take traditional varieties of organic cider apples and perry pears grown in our own orchards and those of our farmers and create handmade individual blends. We carefully select the finest varieties for their distinct flavours and characteristics. It is this careful selection of fruit that gives our drinks the delicate and aromatic flavours and fragrances that Dunkertons have become renowned for.
Every September as soon as the cider apples and perry pears are ripe they are harvested and delivered to us by our farmers. The fruit is washed, milled to a pulp and then pressed in a belt press. The juice is then pumped to our shiny stainless steel vats that can hold up to 10,000 litres of juice.
Every blend or single variety we make is carefully prepared by hand in the first instance. Once aromas, colour, taste, depth and body are thoroughly checked the bottling process begins.
