September Food Hero Brian Turner

We would like to introduce you to our September Food Hero Brian Turner the Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop Buyer. We had the pleasure of catching up with Brian recently at the beautiful Chatsworth House which is the magnificent home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire, located in the Peak District, Derbyshire.

Brian is a champion of great food made with quality ingredients sourced as local as possible. This is what he had to tell us when we asked him some questions about himself and his role.

 NAME: Brian Turner.
JOB TITLE:  Chatsworth Estate Farm Shop Buyer.

What Does Your Typical Day at Chatsworth House Look Like?

I’m in the office by 07.30 to work on admin and respond to emails.  Most mornings are filled with new and existing supplier meetings, looking at new products, ranges and concepts, which if viable are carried forward to my monthly product development/evaluation meetings.  Lunchtimes are normally set aside for tasting/testing the many unsolicited samples that continually arrive (this is a good thing, not a bad thing).  Again, if they have potential, these too are carried forward to the monthly meeting.  Afternoons are generally spent at my desk undertaking range, line and general sales reviews/analysis.

What do you enjoy most about your role as the farm shop buyer for the Chatsworth Estate?

Being a foodie! I really enjoy being introduced to stunning new food innovations and helping small and talented artisan producers to grow their businesses by introducing them to our customers and visitors.  I’m lucky; I get to taste and sample exceptional food.

What inspires you about your role?

The policy, driven by the Duke and Duchess, in nurturing, supporting, developing and encouraging start-up food business in the locality, especially when they go on the be successful beyond the Farm Shop and Estate.  Mind you, working in such stunning surroundings is quite inspirational…

What do you do with your spare time?

It’s mostly spent on my allotment (we are almost self-sufficient in most fruit and veg), tinkering with my car collection, cooking, baking, and eating.

What is you favourite Dunkertons product?

Dunkertons Extra Dry

What is your favourite dish that you like to cook?

Beef Short Rib in Cider Vinegar.  It’s a very simple 17th century dish, packed with caraway seeds.  The long slow cooking means the vinegar leaves a fun piquancy in the finished dish, which balances well with the mild pungency of the caraway.  It’s fab served on creamed horseradish mash.  I enjoy seeing people’s faces change to one of pleasant surprise when their imagination tells them it should be anything but pleasant.

Thank you to Brian for being under our spotlight this month!
