Official Release Dunkertons Finalist  2015 BBC Food & Farming Awards

Dunkertons Cider is celebrating the news that the company has been announced a finalist in the  BBC Food and Farming Awards 2015,  Best Drinks Producer category.

Congratulations to Susie and Ivor

Dunkertons Cider is a family owned company started in 1980 by Susie and Ivor Dunkerton. Relocating from London to the countryside, Ivor and Susie decided to buy a smallholding of eighteen acres and turn it into a viable cider business after noticing the tremendous waste of apples along with a scarcity of chemical and concentrate free farm produced cider. At that time Herefordshire had one dominant cider company with very few farm producers.

The popularity of Dunkertons products is down to the careful selection of traditional varieties of organic cider apples and pears and the careful blending method that produces unique tasting ciders and perrys. Recently Dunkertons have started exporting to Canada, Holland and Finland where their Black Fox cider won ‘Cider of the Year’ at the Helsinki Beer and Cider Festival. In 2014 their Black Fox was shortlisted as a finalist in the Soil Association Organic Food Awards after having won the category in 2013. Ciders and perrys can be bought directly from the Cider Mill in Pembridge where you can taste products straight from the barrel. Mail order is available via Vinceremos Organic Wines.

The BBC Food & Farming Awards celebrate the people and organisations behind the best of British food.  The finalists start off as a nomination sent in by a member of the public and then a team of judges, including some of the UK’s best-known chefs and food writers, select finalists in each category from thousands of entries. Winners will be announced at a ceremony held in Bristol on Thursday 30 April 2015.

Susie explained “We are over the moon to be named as a finalist for the BBC Food and Farming Awards. We believe we were trailblazers in organic production methods and care for the environment back when we started and have been recognised as such by the Soil Association for our endeavours. Being named as a finalist by the BBC judges in the BBC Food & Farming Awards means our hard work, determination and commitment to both real cider production and the organic movement is being recognised on a National industry-wide scale.”

Sheila Dillon, presenter of Radio 4’s The Food Programme and host of the Awards said, “I’ve been judging these awards since they were set up & I’ve never before felt so strongly that food and farming are changing the UK. Many of the best, most entrepreneurial, engaged minds are now in the food business.”
